Charges and regulations

Brown & Co Auction Rooms charge a vendors commission of 20%, with a minimum commission charge of £5 per lot, plus standard rate VAT. A reduced commission charge of 15% is applicable to all individual lots with a value exceeding £1000. There is a handling fee of £1 plus VAT per lot.

Storage charges
The auctioneers reserve the right to make storage charges at the rate of £1 per item per day in respect of any item that remains on the premises 7 days after the owner has been asked to remove it. In such cases, the auctioneer will keep the items until the charge is paid.

Electrical items
In accordance with The Consumer Protection Act 1987 a qualified electrician will test all electrical items for safety and the seller will pay all such charges.  Electrical items that fail the test, or are not tested, cannot be sold.

Soft furnishings
We are unable to sell soft furnishings or upholstered items that
do not fully comply with The Furniture & Furnishing (Fire Safety)
Regulations Act 1988.

Unsold lots
In the case of an unsold lot that is subject to a reserve price higher
than the auctioneers professionally recommended figure, a charge of
10% will be made to cover handling and sale expenses.  Where lots
are unsold but have been offered at the auctioneers recommended
reserve, there will be no charge.

Insurance charge
An insurance charge of 1.5% of the hammer price will be levied on
each lot sold, or if unsold 1.5% of the average of the low and high
estimates.

Conditions
All items are sold subject to the Terms and Conditions of Business
as detailed on the auction entry receipt.
