Perhaps the best collection of Cleethorpes postcards ever assembled is to go under
the hammer in the first auction of the year at the Brigg rooms on January 23rd.

The collection is just extraordinary: Over 1,500 individual cards, covering the
period from the late 19th century through to 1970. The subject matter ranges from views
and street scenes to the comical and slightly risqué numbers that resort visitors at one
time liked to send to their friends back home.

Significantly, there are a huge number of ‘real photographic’ cards, which is to
say photographs individually printed on to postcard paper, as opposed to the mass
production cards turned out in huge numbers by the big printing firms. As our regular
