I originally thought about Architecture as a career path, but was discouraged from pursuing this by my Dad who was…….an Architect! He suggested a career in surveying with the positive endorsement that he had never met a poor surveyor! Following work experience with both Quantity Surveyors & General Practice Surveyors, I discovered that I liked the variety of a General Practice role. The dye was cast & Trent Polytechnic (Now - Nottingham Trent University) beckoned! The rest, as they say, is history…..
6.00am - Rise & Shine
The day starts with letting Henry (the American Cockapoo) out of the house. I live around 50 miles South of the St Neots office, so leave home around 6.45am to avoid the chaos of the local school run. The journey takes me North up the A1M & I reflect on my good fortune of doing the reverse commute, passing the stationary traffic queue of misery heading South towards London.
6.45am - On the road
My misspent youth has proven to be a positive advantage, as I regularly use my motorcycle for the commute……not quite the Isle of Man TT but fun nonetheless. On a related subject, we recently hosted a Charity Motorcycle run from St Neots to Spalding with proceeds going to Magpas the air ambulance charity.
8.00am – In the office .. with a coffee
The working day starts at around 8 am, with a coffee from Costa to kick things off. l check my diary commitments for the day, as well as the week ahead.
We deal with all types of commercial property along with residential land & so the team dynamic across the various disciplines is a real strength of our offer.
We can often be found meeting with colleagues in Professional Services or Planning & Architecture to explore cross fertilisation of ideas & business opportunities.
10.00am – Team talk
The commercial agency team is almost entirely new, so regular catch ups with the team both as a group & individually are an essential part of the working week, ensuring that we are all on track with both existing & new instructions.
1.00pm – Client visits
Our work takes us across large parts of Bedfordshire; Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire & Northamptonshire, albeit we pro-actively look further afield for work. This already happens with Residential Land, for example, with both Phil Halmshaw & Simon Harvey looking at residential sites in South Hertfordshire, close to the M25. For my part, I am currently working on a large scale proposed mixed use project (Outlet retail; Restaurants & Leisure) in the West Midlands.
After Work ..
Outside of work, I am embarking on a volunteering programme to support young people locally in St Neots, who need help with guidance on both life skills & career opportunities. On the social side of life, we now have a badminton club & “thirsty Thursday” if anyone fancies a beverage of some sort & relaxed catch up with colleagues. Predictably, the latter tends to be more popular than the former…!
