There are obvious animal welfare implications to reducing or even ceasing production and a stagnant market for those who have to sell cattle to exit the industry. We enter the spring milk production peak with large amounts of fresh milk produced from spring pasture, so the need is immediate. Production capacity and storage for products with longer shelf lives is vital. Milk buyers tend to be regional, and if one comes under severe pressure the impact on a focussed regional rural economy is extraordinary and the local pressure on dairy farms as result of a price plunge maybe irrecoverable. So we hope that the government response will be prompt, deliberate and meaningful.
