Welcome to the Brown & Co Carbon Calculator.
This calculator has been developed to give an indication of carbon output based on energy usage.
Carbon measurement is becoming increasingly important as customers question the inputs to their products.
Just as importantly, the calculator will highlight energy saving opportunities.
Before you start the calculator, you will need to have to hand information on your energy usage.
The more accurate information you have the more accurate the result will be. It has been developed using the guidelines set out by the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and incorporates the figures as published by Defra 2007. Understanding the Carbon Emissions associated with our activities as businesses and the products we produce is becoming ever more important as Climate Change remains in the forefront of media increasing the awareness of its importance. Most importantly this will help identify where there are opportunities to make savings on your emissions, which will also mean cost savings to energy inputs.
Measuring, Monitoring and Managing is the key to reducing our emissions.
Firstly you need to decide where to set the boundaries of your business, for instance is it just what occurs on your site, on multiple sites; or do you include transport to the next stage in the supply chain, and delivery of products to your site? This will depend on a number of factors such as availability of data, if you are responsible for distribution of produce or products and practicalility of gathering data.
The basic information you will need to hand prior to commencing with the calculator will be the following on an annual basis:
- Energy Usage for the site(s) – Annual Electricity, Gas, Oil, Diesel, LPG.
- Transportation – Mileage and/or Fuel (Diesel, Petrol, LPG, Biodiesel) used in business vehicles.
- Refrigerant gases used – Leakage determined by the amount replaced annually.
- Produce – tonne of product produced or handled.
