A day in the life of a surveyor

Starting the day

I generally aim to be in the office for 8.30am if I have an office based morning. However I am also frequently required to start the day onsite to meet clients, conduct management inspections or undertake viewings. In the winter this is usually the time that I wish I had advised our client to leave the heating on low in the property!

Mid- morning

I will often schedule property inspections to be conducted in the morning to ensure there is enough light and time to have a thorough look. I am involved with a range of work which includes property acquisitions and disposals, rent reviews, valuations and management. We also work with a variety of types of commercial property and each property or site is different. This can present a range of opportunities and sometimes challenges which keeps us on our toes.

One of the most exciting aspects of the job is that every day is unique with new property and sites and more importantly meeting new people and creating new relationships.

We are required to be proactive with our work as often we are working within a time frame. However one of the main challenges we face is that we must remain reactive to issues that arise with either the property/ site that we are managing or with deals that are progressing through solicitors.

If I am in the office around this time I will usually be updating our clients of progress of the disposal or their property/ site or the refurbishment works to their property or estate. Usually these calls/ emails are providing good news and these are the conversations which make our job rewarding.

We generally try and finish the day by having an informal team meeting, this is mainly to touch base on what progress we have made during the day or if any of the team need support with anything (and to chat about what we are having for dinner!).

A perk of the job is that I am lucky enough to get invited to various professional networking events during the week. These evenings are generally hosted by local professional firms and can range from quiz nights, property and legal updates to topical seminars. I recently attended an industry focused ladies cocktail evening with massages which the boys in my department were particularly jealous of!

After a good nights sleep we start all over again!
