Mannington Hall Sold by the Walpole Family after Three Centuries
Fri 13 Jun 2025
Following centuries of stewardship by the Walpole family, the estate has now entered an exciting new chapter with its acquisition by the Ellis family, who also recently purchased the neighbouring Wolterton Estate.
Henry Cockerton, Partner, says, "After many decades of hard work and dedication alongside her late husband, The Right Honourable The Lord Walpole, Lady Walpole has taken the difficult decision to retire from the day-to-day running of the Mannington Estate.
Much care has been taken in the selection of the best placed candidate to become the custodian of this beautiful estate for the next 300 years.
We are pleased to announce that from 31st March, Mr. Richard Ellis, who recently acquired the Wolterton Estate, has been selected to take over the Estate and continue the good work Lord and Lady Walpole have been doing for many years."

Mannington Hall is a property steeped in history, mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and built around 1460 for William Lumnor. Acquired in the 18th century by diplomat Horatio Walpole—brother of Sir Robert Walpole, Britain’s first Prime Minister—it has remained with the Walpole family ever since.
The estate’s distinctive architectural character—Gothic windows, motif chimneys, and snapped flint façades—remains a defining feature. The Ellis family has already begun implementing a revitalisation programme, including the refurbishment of the on-site café, now operated by Norfolk artisan bakery Bread Source, renovations to the holiday cottages, essential maintenance of the lake and moat sluices, and the planning of a long-term garden and parkland refresh.
We are proud to have facilitated the handover of such a significant and beloved estate, ensuring its preservation and enhancement for future generations.
