Rules tighten on autumn muck spreading

DEFRA has published new guidance on manure and slurry applications which are likely to alter spreading plans this autumn.

Under the Farming Rules for Water, autumn spreading is still permitted but only allowed where a “clear and immediate crop and soil nutrient need’’ is demonstrated.

This removes flexibility around “whole-season” nutrient justification.

It means that autumn muck spreading on crops such as winter wheat may no longer be permitted.

To comply, the following requirements are mandatory in every field:

1. A nutrient management plan (NMP) aligned to RB209 standards
2. Soil analysis (P, K, Mg, pH) completed within the last five years
3. Manure or slurry nutrient content testing prior to application
4. Crop nutrient requirement assessment based on current growth stage and uptake capacity
5. Application rate calculations that avoid excesses and meet, but don’t exceed, the identified crop need
6. Documentation showing how spreading decisions were made, including justification, dates, field maps, using accredited software such MANNER NPK or Tried & Tested, and names of qualified advisors (FACTS-accredited)
7. Buffer zones and runoff risk management must be addressed to prevent pollution.

Where high-available nitrogen (RAN) materials such as slurry or poultry manure are used, additional volume and frequency limits apply — typically no more than 30m³/ha and not repeated within three weeks.

The Environment Agency says it will initially take a supportive, advice-led approach but expects full records and compliance on inspection.

Brown&Co is best placed to assist farmers with compliance under the updated Farming Rules for Water, particularly around soil and manure sampling, nutrient management plans and record keeping.
