The Gran Chaco is a region of dry forests and thorny savannah with distinctive dry and wet seasons in the heart of South America covering northern Argentina, western Paraguay, south-eastern Bolivia and western Brazil. Approximately one-sixth of the Chaco runs through Paraguay, where it occupies more than half of the country's land area. Agriculture has been successfully developed in the Alto Chaco region of Paraguay which has a long tradition of dairy and livestock farms dating back to the first settled Mennonite colonies of the 1920's.
